It was very excited and scary at the same time since I have never travelled across the continent alone, especially knowing no one here in the states. However, I did survive to share you my experience.
Like other novices when landing in the new land, we would call taxi to go the hotel, which is quite expensive. There are a few options that you can take advantage of like using Shuttle service, Uber and Lyft for carpool from the air to your destination without a pain.
Airport Shuttle service – focusing on picking up and dropping off passenger from airport and to airport, which is very convenient. Some drivers will help load and unload your luggages and you can offer gratitude with some tips. It is best to use Yelp to look for the right airport shuttle service because things change over the time. The reviews will give an idea, which company to choose from.
Second option is to use either Uber or Lyft (carpooling service), which is available on both iOS and Android. We don’t have that service in my home country so I didn’t about the service at all. Both services are more real time to pair you with other passengers, who might share the same route. However, the main downside is that you need to have a US phone number in order to register and use the apps. Therefore, this is not a good option if you don’t have a phone number yet. Getting the US phone number please click here.
The third option is look for information in the international student page, there should be information about arriving in the US. Some school might state the available options for you to consider and where to ask for help like police number, public transportation, etc.
It is always a better idea to plan ahead so that everything is manageable. At the same time, it is always a good idea to have enough budget about $30 plus for your trip because it is different from one city to another city in living costs.
